Home Studio Acoustic Treatment: Fixing the Room Before Upgrading the Gear

Every home studio hits the same wall: the gear is fine and the mixes still do not travel. The
room is the usual culprit, and it is the component people upgrade last.

Why small rooms lie about bass

Low frequencies have long wavelengths — a 50 Hz tone is roughly 22 feet from crest to crest.
In a typical bedroom those waves reflect off opposing walls and interfere with themselves,
producing standing waves. The result is positions in the room where a given bass note is
enormous, and positions a few feet away where it nearly disappears.

Mix at a null and you compensate by adding bass that is not missing. The track then arrives
boomy everywhere else. This is the single most common reason home mixes fail to translate.


Bass traps first, and put them in the corners

Corners are where pressure builds across all three room dimensions, which makes them the most
efficient place to absorb low frequencies. Thick porous absorbers — mineral wool or fibreglass,
several inches deep, straddling the corner rather than flat against it — do the most work per
dollar in the entire treatment budget.

Thin foam panels do essentially nothing here. Absorption depth scales with wavelength, and
two inches of foam cannot touch a 22-foot wave.

First reflection points

Sound reaches your ears twice: directly from the monitor, and a millisecond later off the side
walls, ceiling, and desk. That delayed copy smears imaging and creates comb filtering. Find the
points with the mirror trick — have someone slide a mirror along the side wall while you sit in
the listening position, and mark every spot where you can see a monitor driver. Those are the
points to treat.

The desk surface is the reflection people forget. Tilting monitors slightly or moving them
forward on stands helps more than another wall panel.

A sane order of operations

  1. Set up symmetrically, monitors and listening position on the room’s centre line.
  2. Corner bass traps, as thick as the room can tolerate.
  3. First reflection points on side walls and ceiling.
  4. Rear wall absorption or diffusion, depending on room depth.
  5. Only then consider new monitors.

Frequently asked questions

Do egg cartons work?

No. They scatter a little high frequency and absorb essentially nothing useful. They are also
a fire hazard.

How much of the room should be covered?

Roughly 20-30% of surface area is a workable target for a mixing room. Over-absorbing the highs
while leaving bass untreated produces a dull room that still lies about the low end.

Can headphones replace treatment?

They sidestep the room for detail work, but stereo and depth decisions still benefit from a
speaker check in a room that behaves.
