The monitors-or-headphones argument usually gets answered as a budget question. It is not.
The two tools fail in opposite directions, and knowing which failure you are hearing is most of
the skill.

What monitors get right that headphones cannot

Speakers put sound into a room, and the room puts its own signature back into the sound. That
sounds like a drawback, and in an untreated room it is. But your listeners hear music in rooms
too. A mix that survives a real acoustic space tends to survive car speakers, kitchen radios, and
laptop grilles.

Monitors also give you crossfeed for free. Each ear hears both drivers, slightly delayed and
filtered by your head. That is how humans localize sound, and it is why stereo imaging decisions

What headphones get right that monitors cannot

A well-placed budget monitor outperforms an expensive one aimed at the back of your skull.
