XLR Cables and Signal Quality: What Balanced Wiring Actually Does

Cable discussion collapses into folklore fast. The physics underneath is simple, well
understood, and worth knowing, because it tells you exactly which cable claims to ignore.

How balanced cabling rejects noise

A balanced line carries the signal twice on two conductors, one of them polarity-inverted.
Interference picked up along the run hits both conductors roughly equally. At the receiving end
the inverted conductor is flipped back and the two are summed: the audio reinforces itself, and
the interference — identical on both lines — cancels.

This is called common-mode rejection, and it is why a 50-foot XLR run past a lighting dimmer
stays quiet while a 15-foot unbalanced instrument cable in the same room buzzes.


Where cable quality genuinely matters

  • Connector build. Most failures are mechanical. Strain relief and solid
    solder joints outlive the cable jacket by years.
  • Shield coverage. Braided or spiral shields with high coverage beat thin
    foil for cables that get coiled and flexed repeatedly.
  • Conductor gauge on long runs. Resistance accumulates over distance; thin
    conductors on a 100-foot snake cost you level.
  • Flexibility and memory. A stiff cable that holds coil shape is a nuisance
    every single session.

Where it does not

Directional arrows on analogue cables, cryogenic treatment, and oxygen-free copper claims sit
outside anything measurable at audio frequencies over the lengths studios use. A competently
built cable from a known manufacturer is a solved problem, and paying more buys durability rather
than fidelity.

Diagnosing hum before blaming the cable

Persistent hum is more often a ground loop than a bad conductor. Two devices grounded through
separate outlets create a current loop through the audio shield. Fixes, in order of preference:
put everything on one power circuit, use balanced connections throughout, then reach for a
transformer-isolated DI as a last resort. Lifting a safety ground pin is not a fix — it is a
shock hazard.
